Went to Knik Bridge to do a Collab with bunch of awesome local photographers!
That is all. haha
This past Saturday I saw a FB event and saw that there was a Peony Farm Tour going on and was about an hour drive out. So that morning I got up and packed my gear to go shoot some photos. the drive was nice and easy when I got there was super surprised by the amount of flowers they had! Definitely a spot to go check out, and they are doing another tour on July 21st form 9-3pm if you guys are interested!
Anyone who is interested in knowing what gear I currently have to do my work. Here is a link!
Its www.donchonphoto.com/gearpage it will be an on going list also I am working on some videos to give out tips on how to shoot with certain lenses and what to look for in compositions. I will be collaborating with local photographers to give their insight on it too!
Also go subscribe to my YouTube Channel there will be consistent content coming out in next few weeks! YOUTUBE
It's summer and that means lots of outdoor stuff. I've been pretty busy with client work and finally got time to get some free time and went to this car meet up that my friend told me about. Met some dope people, saw some really cool cars, and obviously saw my friends. Any who, here is the video that I made from the meet up and hopefully you guys like it!
I got the opportunity to watch the artist Lori Pratico work from start to finish on Chalk Mural that she did on the Anchorage Lutheran Social Services Wall. The Project representing "It is the time we notice what makes every girl extraordinary, because everyday a girl or woman is left unnoticed, is a day too long." To follow this awesome project go to www.girlnoticed.com and follow her on IG @GirlNoticed.
Had a dope time watching these high school kids grow and learn new skills. It was eye opening to see such active learning in kids and finally see students learn practical skills that they will use in their adult lives. Prostart is such a awesome program that allows such things. Honestly think more programs like this should be implemented in schools so kids who don't want to follow traditional learning have an outlet to gain more life experience.
UPDATE! 2 DAYS IN A ROW!
I guess the momentum is going good!
I didn't have a outdoorsy thing planned and I had to get shirts/hoodies printed for a client so here's a print day!
I missed out on last 2 days of Vlogmas but here is Episode 002!
I WILL SURVIVE!
What's UP guys!
It's December and you know what that means! Well...people who follow Youtube will mainly know.
IT'S VLOGMAS! That means every day till Christmas a vlog will be out. I'm back at it again going head first and wanting this to be my momentum to keep on vlogging. Any who go check out my vlog and ALSO big shout out to Will Ingram for his Official First Friday @ Heart of the City and also saw Steven Cornfield doing a pop up shop for his brand Cut & Caliber. If you need any hair product and such go check out their website!
SOOOOOOOOOO there's this thing called Net Neutrality in the USA. This legislation is currently in effect right now. This is allowing the Internet Service Provider Companies to allow us the customers to preserve the right to communicate via online freely. Currently by law the internet is considered a utility. If you think about how much we use the internet for in this day and age, we USE IT FOR EVERYTHING. Right now the internet service providers are forced to provide us with a open network instead of charging us for every little bit and pieces.
Basically if you think of the internet like a highway, you have the slow lane and fast lane. If the "RESTORING THE INTERNET FREEDOM" law passes then you will be charged for going into the fast lane. BUT with that there is a catch, even if you pay more to go into the fast lane, if the ISP (Internet Service Providers) will block certain app if that company does not like it.
IE Comcast prefers Hulu and does not prefer Netflix since Comcast has money in Hulu. Comcast can intentionally slow down Netflix and put in preferential treatment to Hulu, unless you pay more to obtain "better bandwidth" to allow that site to work.
We already had won the previous Net Neutrality legislation to keep the internet on how it is right now. For more information HERE IS A LINK.
Here is some more videos on the issue. We need to get this Legislation to NOT GET PASSED.
I'm back on it again...god...this is so difficult but I'm going to try to be more consistent.
So here is a video of me with Allison and Gabby going up Arctic Valley for a little hike and to have coffee at the top.
Hope everything is going well with you all! Been busy with work and a good friend of mine from WAY BACK WHEN! is back in town and never really explored Alaska!
So I thought we would go to a nice little spot and check it out. I hoped it would be a nice sunny day but ended up being a rainy hike which was also fun anyways!
Check out the little video and hope to see you in the next post!
It's been a while since my last post. Been super busy and getting things organized in my life. One thing I've learned in working for myself is GIVE VALUE! That will return itself 100 fold. Stick to your guns, do what you believe and give value. I've learned that and knowing how to sell yourself on what you can do is key.
I am going to say that networking is key in any business. There will be the "BS" clients that will come your way but that's just given with any type of work. Learn to deal with those and keep the ones you like happy and they will give value back in one way or another.
It is true that if your business does not make it past the 5 year mark then you probably did something wrong to not make it that far. Either not meeting enough people or not wanting to work as many hours as you needed. That is what I'm learning in working for myself. Doesn't matter on what you want. You can WANT to be filthy rich, WANT to have that super nice house, WANT to have that nice car. But if your not wanting to put in the time to make it work then your doing something wrong. Complaining about how much your actually working or your not making enough money doesn't cut it in this world. If your sleeping from 9PM-7AM every single day, watching every single sports game that fits your fancy, every popular show of the season, and complaining about how your life isn't great. THEN CHANGE IT UP! Find another job that you can work between 9PM-7AM, sleep a little less, and make extra cash.
Don't be concerned about what other people think. It's not their life, its yours. If your satisfied with how your life is then this post isn't for you. This post is for those who want to do more in their life or feel that there is something lacking. Go utilize your time and stop complaining about not having enough time, cut the fat out of your life and do something productive.
Felt like making this post on the realization that has come to me in this year. You can make your own money if you 100% put yourself in the business and be consistent. If you feel like or KNOW that your lacking in funds. FIND A JOB TO SUPPLEMENT IT! All you have in life is time. Only you can make use of that. Give people value and you will get value back in one way or another. Make expectations and don't bite more than you can chew. Pay people what they are worth and on time.
Everyone has potential but not everyone is meant for that lifestyle. But if you are the type and KNOW KNOW yourself. Do that hustle and work. Nothing in this life comes easy and cheap. You will either pay for it through time or money or both. Learn from it and learn yourself.
So I've had my 17in Mac since 2012ish. It is already 3 OS behind and initially came out with OS 10.7 (OS Lion) and currently in 10.13 (High Sierra). I'm to the point where a lot of the upgrades will not be comparable with my current Mac and the so far video rendering/photo editing is somewhat lagging. My 17in Mac has a AMD Radeon HD6770M 1GB Graphics Card and I upgraded the HDD to a 1TB SSD and it has 16GB of RAM. Everything else it works AWESOME. I was very content with the user friendly interface and how it links very well with my iPhone. But due to the AMD graphics card and mainly using Adobe software; I need to upgrade my work horse.
A lot of people will say that instead of putting money into a laptop I should get a desktop. The workflow I have, I prioritize portability. Plus I do not have space or want to use a desktop tower. I could spend the same amount of money to get duel cheap graphics cards a SSD for the OS and a fast HDD, 32GB of decent ram and a decent i7 processor. BUT I can't use it anywhere when I'm traveling and want to do same day edits. Plus I've been used to being on laptops for editing and very comfortable with it for the travel convience and use. From my last travel to Korea and able to use my laptop to edit videos/photos same day so I didn't have GIGABYTES of photos to edit at the end of my trip back home was awesome.
Thus my search started for a new laptop. Since I will be continuing to use Adobe Software, I 100% need to find a laptop with NVIDIA graphics card. Preferably 1050ti or 1060. Also to get a change of pace I was wanting to search or a PC. I will still use my Mac as a backup since it has the Adobe CS6.
So far from my search of potential work horse. Main brands that came to mind was ASUS, MSI, RAZER, and Dell. I've always been a fan for ASUS since that was my first gaming laptop during college. I had the 2nd generation of the G7 which was an awesome computer but just had cooling issues.
Obviously $$ is a consideration and anything between the 900-1500 dollar range would be good for me for the next 3-5 years. 2nd thing would be screen quality for photo/video editing due to the nature of my business. 3rd would be usability of the system like the keyboard and mouse and speakers and such.
First pick ended up being the ASUS ROG STRIX 15.6-inch priced at $1200.00 (Referb)
It has NVIDIA GTX 1060 3GB. Intel i7-6700HQ Processor. 1TB HDD.
This was a strong contender due to size, price and specs of the entire system. However, the screen quality is not the greatest. The contrast is good but for content creators when color correcting images and videos it isn't the greatest.
Next is the ASUS FX502VM-AS73 Priced at $1,151.73 on Amazon New.
This has the same points as above for me. Great graphics card (GTX 1060 3GB), Intel i7-7700 (Somewhat better CPU, almost negligible to most people), Fast SSD 128GB and 1TB HDD, 16GB of RAM. This has the same issues with the previous laptop. The screen quality for video/photo editing is not that great. This also has a better battery life due to the no DVD drive providing more space for batteries. However, I still have clients that want CDs of their photos and such which needs me to have that disc drive. But, I can just transfer it via USB to my Mac and burn a DVD/CD; that neither here or there.
Another is Alienware AW15R3-0012SLV Laptop Priced at $1056.20
This again has a GTX 1060 Graphics Card BUT instead of 3GB it is 6GB graphics card. Downside for is that it has a i5 processor instead of i7 and 8GB of RAM instead of 16. No SSD and has a 1TB HDD. Downside of this computer is the processor and and half the ram initially. Also from the reviews the cooling isn't that great and gets "comfortably warm" which isn't great when your using the laptop for long periods of time.
Next is the MSI GE62VR Apache 15.6-inch Priced at $1,499.00.
This one has like the previous ones a GTX 1060 3GB Graphics Card. 16GB of RAM and Intel i7-7700 CPU. 128GB SSD and 1TB HDD. BUT the screen on this has the most color accurate out of all the ones I have mentioned above.
And as you have guessed by the end of this blog, I have chosen the MSI due to screen quality of the laptop. It is significantly more important to me personally due to the nature of what I do to have color accurate edits. The battery life isn't that great but from how I use my computer I'm used to keeping my laptop plugged in and trying to find a outlet isn't that hard especially now a days. Another plus on this computer is the SD Card Slot to get media off my camera instead of using a USB port.
I have ordered it form Amazon so I will give a quick review after I start using my new Laptop and see how I like it. If I don't then I will be returning it back to Amazon and trying to another one. But hopefully I have made the right choice and if you want a better in depth review of this you can watch it HERE.
Hope you guys find this useful on your next purchase of laptops!
See you guys in the next post!
Ok. Here's the deal. Now a days social media is king. We all use it. We are all on our phones. No denying it that it does work. Everyone has at least a Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, or Snapchat account. (I have all the above😅) 95% of people LOVE it when their images they post get ALOT of likes. It makes them feel happy/excited/popular. Even today's youth, majority of them when asked about a job they want to pursue. "I want to be a Youtuber", "I want to be Instagram Famous". This shows where the trend of how the market of today's society is. I still goto magazines and such to get ideas of how to take photos and still watch movies to get inspiration on how to shoot. But via advertising to the masses, Social media is best. Lots of brands are now starting up just using social media as it's bread and butter. To just get to the point. If you want legitimacy in business now a days, You have to have a certain number of followings on Instagram, certain number of subscribers on Youtube, certain number of "Points" on Snapchat and so forth.
With the demand of getting more followers and likes a new market emerged from that. There are APPS out in the open that you can BUY Followers and Likes. But those are short term. You go from having about 100-150 followers to 5-10K within matter of weeks doesn't really make any sense. Plus your engagement will only be very small. 20-50 likes per post with a 5-10K following doesn't make sense. Also those bots will get deleted by Instagram every so often with the purge they do every year. So your money isn't worth all that. You have to be in it for the long haul and be in it for consistency.
I read a book by Gary Vee called "Jab Jab Jab RIGHT HOOK." Mainly talks about giving value to whatever you go do. Don't be the guy/girl who right from the get go ask for stuff. People will tend to say no right away. You haven't given any value to that person at all and doesn't make sense for them to say yes. Like in boxing you keep jabbing to get a feel for the person and create a connection for the right hook. It is same for business and everything in life. You give other people value and overtime you've given so much value that they have to say yes. Mind you don't go overboard and give too much where its a detriment to yourself. But something you can give. Weather it be extra time you have to spend to help out a friend, conversation, and money is just a sticky situation in itself so I won't get into that.
It is same for social media. Give value to other people like posting their images on your page and they will post yours on theirs. Collaborate and help each other out. There is plenty of space on these platforms to better each other and give each other value. People can see when people are being genuine, especially on the internet.
So social media...its a fast form of how life works. You be consistent at it and do your best. It will reap results. PEROID.
Whats up guys!
So this blog is for the people who need camera gear but do not have the funds to obtain what they need. Those in that situation you have one of 2 options. One save up money and buy the gear/accessory later down the line OR you can improvise and DIY it.
Recently I just got the Zheyun Crane for my camera so that I can get steady gimbal shots for video. Only problem is that when I'm waiting to get shots I'm holding onto a 6-8lbs of camera equipment for however long. This would be a problem especially on a hike or something.
But the nice thing about the Zhiyun Crane is that it has a a 1/4" screw thread on the bottom of the handle to attach to a tripod or monopod. This makes it perfect to attach gear to it. There are D-Link camera screws out there but I don't feel safe using those. There is a possibility of it breaking thus breaking the entire unit. Next best thing is HomeDepot or Lowe's. I got a 1/4" eye screw for $1.55 which is way less than a single D-Link camera screw. Normally about $5.00 on average at your local camera shop or online. It has less points of contact for possible breaking and its stainless steel. Just add a carabiner and you can hold it from your backpack.
I just asked the employee to have the eye socket screw cut down to size since it was too long and BAM easy cheap camera attachment.
Just thinking outside the box and understanding what your needs are and trying to DIY it for as little money as possible and getting the best outcome for your needs will work for you a hundred folds.
You don't need fancy equipment or accessories to get better use of your gear. Know the limitations of the gear and be creative of what your mind can come up with. You are a creative and make use of the noggin on those shoulders.
You can also more than likely use this to do a rolling shot from 2 points with the crane attached via paracord from one spot to another.
That is more than likely another blog post.
ANYWAYS hope this inspires you to do a little more thinking outside the box and see you guys in the next blog!
